There's another solution which doesn't need to downgrade:



sudo /etc/init.d/udev stop

sudo update-rc.d -f udev remove

sudo /etc/init.d/udev start

sudo update-rc.d udev defaults



After rebooting my ubuntu box loads gdm fine. Thanxs to codejunkie from
the ubuntuforums.
