Actually mplayer is available in the multiverse repository of Ubuntu. See

Using the Debian Marillat repositories is fraught with danger for Ubuntu users, and has caused trouble for many, because Ubuntu is usually out of synch with Debian owing to its 6 month release cycle. On #ubuntu IRC ( irc.freenode.net) we have seen the nerim/marillat repos cause problems.
This is no reflection on the quality of Christian Marillat's work, just a fact becuse of the points above.
Please don't use the marillat repos unless you know exactly what you are doing - that is, you understand how using particular packages might affect your system.
