You probably want to do a search for laptop in aptitude or synaptic.  If 
you're using gnome, acme MAY be what you need.  There are also some specific 
utilities for individual laptop models or makes -- just look search through 
the stuff available.  "fblevel", which might be already installed, could help 
too.
