I do not understand where your problems are coming from. I do suppose
that you are all using the same package to install java. I can not
tell. I for my part, created a package using the "fakeroot make-jpkg
*.bin" (replacing * by your package name, obviously). I than created
the symlink to the plugin and everything works fine for me. No crashes
whatsoever.

What I can offer you, is to use the same package I have used for my
installation. A package that I created myself, for personal use only,
actually. It is located at http://files.hentges.lu/debian and is
called "http://files.hentges.lu/debian/sun-j2sdk1.5_1.5.0+update04_i386.deb".

While it is the j2sdk version, and it works fine for me, I must add
that if I were you, I would not necessarily want to install such a
package from somebody I do not know. It isn't a secure procedure, as I
am not an official maintainer or something at Ubuntu and might by
there include some nasty things in the package.

But as it might help you, I want to offer the possibility.
