If Mr. Maddock is running a firewall box, he probably does not want to
run a GUI.



You probably want a tool like etherconf.  Etherconf is a package that
takes care of that for you:



"Etherconf is a debconf-based interface for configuring Ethernet
devices on your system. It supports both manual and DHCP-based
configurations."



http://packages.ubuntu.com/breezy/net/etherconf

(It is in Warty and Hoary, too)





sudo apt-get install etherconf



sudo dpkg-reconfigure etherconf



to probe your hardware again and adjust changes.
