Localhost connection to MySQL fails ?

Hi everyone,
I tried to connect to the installed MySQL server local with the GUI
Admin tool and with the command line described in the Ubuntu Guide.
Unfortunate I get the following error message:

"mysqladmin: connect to server at 'localhost' failed
error: 'Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: NO)'"

How do I make it happen that I can connect via localhost ???

(have also installed firestarter firewall, but disabling or changing
rules didn't help)
