Not sure if this will help, but I built (installed really) e17 from .debs with these directions:

Personally I'm really loving e17 - and having it in the .debs is cool cause then Ubuntu-updater picks up the updates and I don't have to do anything special, plus it 'just works(tm)'

Going to look into using e17/Gnome next.
