pppoe configuration - very newbie questions

After doing a bit more research it appears very likely that I should be 
using pppoe to configure my dsl connection. How do I launch this? I'm 
running a fresh install of Ubuntu 5.10 and know amazingly little about linux 
;). Can it be launched from the standard gnome menus somewhere or do I 
launch it as root, or from the console? Also, perhaps more importantly, what 
will pppoe require that I know about my ISP. I've got a login and password, 
but I don't know any ip or dns info.
