Updating Synaptic

Hi all, i added extra repositories recently and it
seemed to work fine. But then I tried to update
(reload) and get and get this error message all the
time:

Could not download all repository indexes

http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/hoary-backports/Release.gpg:

I suspect that I may have done something incorrectly
in the sources.list

Also I notice that my system has been a bit unstable
the last couple of days. Is there a way to restore the
system to a previous date? (kinda like in windose).
