Playback of avi files becomes jerky after awhile, how to fix?

Hello...

When playing back avi files in totem-xine or gxine, I find that the
video on some files become jerky and out of sync with the audio, with
the video sometimes stuck at one part (the progress bar slider keeps
moving back and forth in place sometimes at some point). The files have
played fine in the past, though. Any reason this might occur, or how to
fix it? Specs: Ubuntu (Hoary Hedgehog), all windows codecs installed,
2.4 ghz Celeron processor, 256 MB RAM.
