Do you have the package 'linux-restricted-modules-2.6.12-8-xxx (where xxx is 
the arch of your running kernel) installed?  

Also, check your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file and make sure that you are using the 
'nvidia' driver and not 'nv'.  Maybe you could include the "Module" and 
"Device" sections of your xorg.conf file so we could take a look at it?
