This is pretty much *never* necessary with Debian/Ubuntu, unless you screw 
something up.  Most people who track debian's unstable branch or breezy 
upgrade on a daily basis, with few or no problems.  Upgrading to releases is 
very similar, except that the packages are more heavily tested and known to 
"work".  So yes, as long as you're trying to upgrade rather than downgrade, 
there shouldn't be any major problems.
