Actually, if I understand correctly, dialog is an ncurses based method that works within a terminal or tty, whereas Zenity supplies X-based gtk2 dialogues etc . Xdialog can be used with dialog, but is gtk 1.2 . The Xdialog documentation goes into the details of using Xdialog/dialog interchangeably, depending on whether X is running or not.
