You might also look at the "Streamtuner" and "Streamripper" programs: they are both in the universe repository. Streamtuner gives you a GUI interface/selector for streaming radio , while streamripper allows you to rip music by clicking a button on the streamtuner toolbar. Streamripper also separates tracks and saves them in a stream-specific directory for you. Very nice.
By default the player used for playing streams is xmms - but this can be changed to a player of your choice in Edit - Preferences. From " apt-cache show streamtuner" :
Current plugins included in this package are:
* SHOUTcast
* Live365
* Xiph.org
Each of the above sources appears in a tab of its own - there is also a tab for your "local" music directory.
