Thanks.  I'll have a look at inotify.

I'll try that, though I don't really have enough knowledge to fiddle
with advanced bios settings.  I did run a non smp kernel for a short
while (that's what was installed by default, and I had to turn USB off
to get that installed) and didn't have a problem with it, but I may not
have run it for long enough.
