Not sure of it is the solution for you, but do you have
gstreamer-pitfdll installed?  (its available for breezy in multiverse
I think).  anyway with that and the w32codecs pack, totem should be
able to handle just about anything.  pitfdll is a plugin that glues
the w32codecs into gstreamer just like xine and mplayer have.
