Do you have a very high CPU utilization/load while playing those media
files?  Are you sure you're using XVideo (XV for short) to play those
files?  You could check about XV by running "xvinfo" from a terminal
within X.  To force MPlayer to use XV, pass the "-vo xv" option to it.
Like this:
        mplayer -vo xv media_file.mpeg
As for GStreamer based applications, go to "System" --> "Preferences"
--> "Multimedia System Selector", go to the "Video" tab, and from the
"Output" pull-down menu, select "XWindows (X11/XShm/Xv)" and click
"Test".
