I've since tried to boot the XP disk and also had problems. Firstly it
hung after a message saying that setup was checking the hardware. Then
after disabling USB (because I seem to have to disable USB in the bios
to get linux to install, I did the same for this Windows setup)
the setup started properly, but then hung with a message suggesting I
should remove any recently installed controllers, look for viruses
(maybe it thinks grub is a virus?) check everything, etc. Although there
is a bootable pci Promise controller that has been added after the
original Windows installation, I can't really remove it as the cdrom
runs from it.

smartctl does not report anything wrong with the drive that windows is
on, and linux can access it OK.

Maybe I have to replace the mbr for the windows disk to work properly,
and then find a way of re-installing grub.

Thanks. I'll try that.
