I manage to use the alsa driver for my modem (snd_intel8x0m). I've put
up a slightly modified sl-modem-daemon package in my private repo[1]
that removes the dependency on the sl-modem-source.

Software is not manufactured, it is something you write and publish.
Keep Europe free from software patents, we do not want censorship
by patent law on written works.

First we thought the PC was a calculator. Then we found out how to turn
numbers into letters with ASCII, and we thought it was a typewriter. Then
we discovered graphics, and we thought it was a television. With the World
Wide Web, we've realized it's a brochure.
