Andrew, I suggested you use 'du -ks' instead since I think you have some
sparse files on your filesystem.  'ls' will lie about the actual
filesize in those cases.  That would seem to be the case with your
post, since your file only takes up 1 4k block, and that file is only
<2k (I believe).



Man, it's been ~10 years since I really swam hip deep in Unix
administration, so I was just taking a stab at a guess tthere.  The -S
tar switch handles those sparse files.



Have you ever extracted any (prior) tar backup files onto your / (root)
partition before this latest tar hickup?
