D'oh! Please excuse my mistake. I tried gksudo gnome-terminal and it
worked. After this, I opened the Gnome menu editor smeg and found out
that the 'Root Terminal' actually tries to start gksudo
/usr/bin/x-terminal-emulator. But my alternatives were somehow broken
and /etc/alternatives/x-terminal-emulator was linked to a non-existing
file. So I run update-alternatives and everything is fixed (and I learnt
a little bit more about Debian/Ubuntu administration).

Thanks a lot for your help and your patience, Dennis :-)

Cheers, Jochen
