That's the method I'd suggest. It's also the most
user-friendly. The turn-off-the-x-bit approach seems like a
hack to me, particularly if someone else comes to your
machine and asks, "Why the $%&* isn't GDM starting?" The
rcconf solution is better-documented, in a sense.

That seems like a bit much. Only take this approach, I'd
say, if you think you'll never again be using GDM. Otherwise
uninstalling it is excessive.
