Desktop problems

Right click on the panel, select "Add to Panel" from the popup menu.
Look for "Workspace Switcher", select it and click "+Add".  (Or drag and
drop if you like.)

Sorted!  Though it would be nice to know what causes this;  both
Workspace Switcher and Window List seem to be prone to doing this
vanishing trick...
