I was concerned by the thought that Ubuntu "renders the power button
useless". So I wanted to clear that up.
There are two types of power management. One is ACPI and the other is
APM. (And PMU also, but only on Apple.)

Which one you need depends on which laptop you have. My Compaq N800c
uses ACPI. With Ubuntu (Hoary) it shuts down gracefully. And gives me
a battery status indicator in the top panel. Doesn't hibernate, though.
What kind of laptop are you installing Ubuntu on? And are you using
Hoary or Breezy?
