Earthlink DSL failing to see Ubuntu

Or is Ubuntu failing to see the DSL?
I don't know.  The web browser says I have a good connection, all the
little lights are lit correctly, but my connection is not used by
Ubuntu.  I have been through the (pitiful) earthlink troubleshooting
guide but it just says to keep resetting the router/modem and that
doesn't help.  So far the forums haven't been much help, either. 
Possibly I am searching the wrong terms.
Can anybody help?  I'm dying to see this 'broadband' everybody keeps
talking about.
