problems installing Ubuntu

Yeah you will need to reinstall hoary again.

It will keep asking for a connection but if you keep saying no then it
will bypass that.  The reason for this is it 'updates' hoary after the
install is completed and part of that is linked to the install.

You can skip that part and connect the modem later.
