Updating repositories

When I try to update the repositories in synaptic, I
get the following massage:

E: Could not get lock /var/lib/apt/lists/lock - open
(11 Resource temporarily unavailable)
E: Unable to lock the list directory

I've never had this problem before. 
What's the problem here?
