As far as I know, "Helvetica" is a propriety font (owned by Adobe?).
But that's not the problem!  The problem is that there isn't a TrueType
version of that font available for X (only a "Type 1" for printing).

If you really need that font badly for your X (not for printing, as it's
available already), either install "msttcorefonts" which includes the
"Arial" font (which is very similar to "Helvetica" in shape and
characteristic), or run "sudo dpkg-reconfigure fontconfig" and check
"Enable bitmapped fonts by default?".

Again, Helvetica (the version included with X) isn't a scalable font,
for that reason, it'll look very awful on your screen.
