The boot-loader may be damaged (mbr in windows). You can reinstall eg.
grub OR if he really want to give up so easely just put in the windows
disk and choise the repair and the boot-loader may be reinstalled.
Otherwise just reinstall DSL or a knoppix where you have installed the
ubuntu so you can help him more in the future and the mbr-area and a fresh
grub will apear.
