PPracer and sound

I'm on running on a Dell Inspiron 1100.
Today, I downloaded PPRacer(ex-Tux racer) for my daughter, really.  
Anyway, I get the music when I start it from a terminal command prompt 
via "ppracer". But when I start it from the games menu via the mouse, it 
is silent.  I messed around with the Multi-media Systems Selector in the 
preferences menu.  No change.
Anybody got any ideas?
