webcam woes

hi there, I bought a Labtec Webcam because it's listed as being 
supported  by Spca5xx (http://mxhaard.free.fr/spca5xx.html). But I can't 
for the life of me work out what to do about getting it working...

I've downlaoded and unpacked it but it wants me to recompile my kernel. 
Eeeek!!! I would't dare (unless someone can help me through it)

Is there anywhere I can get a kernel with spca50xx already compiled as a 
module? Please help me out.
