You mean that opening a folder automatically closes the parent, and
Shift+Doubleclick leaves the parent open?

Go to Applications -> System Tools -> Configuration Editor. Then go
to /apps/nautilus/preferences. Locate the key "no_ubuntu_spacial" and
uncheck it.
