There can often be other issues. Some built-in drivers will give you
DRI and accelerated X, but only at 16bbp.

Subject: legacy NVIDIA drivers
hey there list,
I have figured out, after several weeks of no accelerated x, that the
problem is that my three year old card is unsupported by the current
nvidia drivers. I have an nvidia Geforce2 Ti (PCI-ID:0151). Is the
correct driver in a debs package that I haven't found (doesn't appear to
be in modules-restricted) or do I need to find the installer for
"legacy" cards from the nvidia site?
TIA,
Sam
