Dear Upstream:

First of all, there's no emergency here. I have my printer installed,
but it took not only reading the screen, but also reading the name and
model off of the front of the printer, and using deductive reasoning.

This is a problem because, well, you already know if you've ever worked
at a help desk.

I have a Brother HL-1240 connected via USB. The PC was already and the
printer was plugged in via usb but not plugged in to power. I plugged
the printer in and turned it on, but no printer pop-up dialogue (no
biggie).

I then went into system > admin > printer > new printer and it said that
the printer was not detected. When I had done this in Gentoo it didn't
have an automatically detected window, but it did present me with a list
that had the non-plug-n-play ports, but also "usb1 : Brother". When I
looked at the list in Ubuntu it showed me usb#1 through usb#16 with no
name of printer and at the very top "no_hp_detected" "parallel#1 epson"
"parallel#1 canon".

I would have expected to see just "Parallel 1", "USB 1: Brother HL-1240"
(as lsusb recognized it just fine). Since I don't have 16 usb ports, I
don't have 2 parallel ports, and I certainly don't have an epson, or
canon plugged in, and I really don't care to be notified that I don't
have an hp I think that this dialogue would be confusing to the average
user.

[OT] On a very positive note:

I turned on my PC this morning without the monitor turned on. When I
turned on the monitor the screen was in an ugly VGA mode. I rebooted and
it was back to normal.

This is great because now I know that new monitors are automatically
detected and installed. Sometime today I might hook up my widescreen and
see if it actually works this time around (also noticing that the
default background comes in a widescreen edition). Yay!
