apt-get dist-upgrade to breezy: no firefox, no icons

This morning I apt-get dist-upgraded to Breezy. Everything went fine
with the following two exceptions:

 * Firefox won't start.  It displays a profile dialog, I choose a
   profile, then it just sits there doing nothing (no CPU load, no
   windows appearing). Creating a new profile doesn't help. Running
   with -safe-mode doesn't help. Running an old and working version of
   firefox on a diffferent machine through SSH X forwarding exhibits the
   same symptoms. Running the breezy version of firefox through SSH X
   forwarding to an X server on another machine works fine. Mozilla 1.7
   works locally.

 * Icons on the desktop disappeared -- I get the generic "sheet of
   paper" icon for all objects on the desktop. The trashcan applet
   appeas as a sheet of paper with a big red X. Some (but not all)
   icons in the menu are not available -- System -> Preferences ->
   Mouse, for example. Cursors, Keyboard, Windows, Removable Media, and
   Encryption items are all iconless, the rest are fine. Places menu
   has no icons except for the last three (Connect to Server, Find File,
   Recent Files)
