can't print to pdf in hoary

This seems to still be broken in Breezy as well.



I can create a .ps file from Firefox, and that file opens fine in
Evince, etc.



However ps2pdf on the file results in no text; I also tried using
ghostscript directly (with gs-esp, gs-gpl, and gs-afpl !!) all with the
same results -- images but no text at all.



This is pretty major; it means that cups-pdf is also broken in the
exact same way.  



Any ideas what's wrong or how to fix it?
