Xorg running at 20-30% CPU (or higher) constantly - Ubuntu 5.10

My system is running pathetically slow and when I run
top, it shows Xorg running at at least 20%, usually
more near 30%, constantly, even just sitting idle.
What can I check to fix this?
It's a fairly new install on an AMD Athlon XP 1600+
with 384 MB ram and Nvidia 32MB.
> vmlinuz-2.6.12-9-k7

I have tried the nvidia-glx-legacy drivers (I have a
nvidia tnt 32mb pci video card) per instructions at :
http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=73810&highlight=nvidia+legacy
Maybe I haven't installed the video drivers right?

I even tried going from the k7 kernel to the 686.

Short of a reinstall, what else can I try or look at?
