Or it could be the notorious power drain in ACPI sleep problem that
plagues Thinkpads with Radeon cards.  Some x40s have a Radeon, others
have Intel video.

If ACPI suspend works, you will see the little moon icon light up.  If
the power cable is disconnected, other indicator lights will be off.
