Is it via DHCP or Static?

If Static, edit /etc/network/interfaces file. Mine looks like this.
iface eth0 inet static
        address 192.168.70.3
        netmask 255.255.255.0
        network 192.168.70.0
        broadcast 192.168.70.255
        gateway 192.168.70.1
Then, ifdown and ifup as usual.

HTH,

Winston

May be just a type but .... did you use "Sudo"? Normal users can't
change ifconfig settings.
