I haven't heard of that one before...
The way I heard it was "Do one thing, do it well" as applied to 
operating system tools, and that a shell script may be fashioned to 
perform any complex task by means of combining the various functions of 
the different tools through the wonders of output and input redirection 
and piping.

Having said that, your solution to the problem is more elegant, since it 
only uses one tool. If, however, one were to be using wildcards, the 
expansion of which would cause the line length limit to be exceeded, 
then my solution would work, ugly as it is, wheras yours would fail.
