Yes, to both your questions.

I have ATI Radeon 7500, 9000, and 9200 cards in three different 
systems.  They all work fine, including perfectly adequate 3D 
accelerated graphics, with the open source (xorg) drivers.  I don't 
see any good reason to use the proprietary ATI drivers for these cards.
