as a speech-recognition user for over 10 years, I can tell you that the
the large vocabulary general dictation world is in a sorry state.
There's one vendor selling a product for the Macintosh (macspeech).
There is one vendor selling product for windows (scansoft). ScanSoft is
not does not properly care for its user community. The product is the
decaying, bugs remain unfixed for years and it almost seems like they
are trying to force their customers into using Microsoft products
because those are the only ones that work with it.
If you can avoid spending money with ScanSoft, do so. If you can't, by
the cheapest product you can get away with. But one thing they don't
tell you is the headset that comes with the software is a piece of crap.
Get a good headset like the VXI parrot with translator box.
when the open source speech recognition initiative gets its tax exempt
status going, please help and please contribute. I can tell you what's
in the queue yet because permission to release the information has not
been granted but it's quite interesting and will bring speech
recognition based handicap accessibility one step closer in the Linux
world.
