presuming you have all the necessary software installed to play your
music files, you might open a terminal and type

    gstreamer-properties

and for the output sink, try selecting ALSA or OSS. I don't have ALSA
installed, but I've read that it may work. I do have OSS installed and
upon selecting it as my output sink, both rythmbox and xmms work great
without having to run esd every time I login. Of course, I had to
change my output selection within the XMMS preferences, but that was
obvious (to me).
