g-v-m pmount umask

Is there an easy way to change the umask that gnome-volume-manager
uses to mount removable media via pmount? I know  how to change it
when manually mounting it, but I can't find anything to change g-v-m's
behavior. While I'm doing that, what exactly is the reason for
mounting drives with a umask of 077? It'd be nice to know before I go
off and break my computer.
