Hm... I think Rhythmbox is trying to talk to GStreamer, which is
trying to talk to esd, which is not started by XFCE (but it is by
GNOME).

You can try starting esd on a terminal or call gstreamer-properties
and chance the output sink to alsa.

I'm just guessing this here (but I think I had the same problem when I
tried to use XFCE as default).
