You can always reconfigure Xorg to have multiple choices for resoultion:

sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

Near the end, you will find the section that asks you for a list of
resolutions, just mark the ones you would like, and restart X.

You also might make sure that you are using a card specific driver (you
can choose in this setup) and that you are not using a generic low
quality one.
