What video card does that system have?

Sounds like it's using a generic video card driver, that only supports
640x480.

The true telling is in /etc/X11/xorg.conf  

Look in that file for a section titled "Device" that describes the
driver in use.

To get the actual device name of your video card do this:
1. Open a terminal.
2. sudo cat /proc/pci
3. Look for a line describing your video card.  Usually it says
something like "nvidia.... VGA".
