I have a similar problem on my powerbook (G4 800) (and with other
distributions), for quite a while now (probably 18 months or more) so
I don't think it is a sign of imminent failure.
Generally I just ctrl-alt-f1 ('text' screen) ctrl-alt-f7 (back to
graphics screen) to 'fix' it.
I do not know a more permanent fix though.
