First of all - I've solved the problem by installing VMWare 5.5 - I had been
using 5.0. Now vmware starts correctly when I run it, and there are no sudo
problems.

I was after general tips on what to do when sudo stops working. I was at a
bit of a loss - the only thing I could do was restart, which is a bit of a
Windows-like way of going about it. On Windows, rebooting is the first thing
to try, on Linux it should be the last thing to try!

I think vmware is a special case, because it includes kernel modules,
virtual device drivers etc., so if something goes wrong with it, it can
bring down the whole system.

As an aside, I'm now installing Windows in the virtual machine, and it's
*painful*. Install the OS, then try and find all the drivers from various
CDs and websites, then download all the updates, then install all the apps
from various places... give me an Ubuntu install any day!
