vmware breaks sudo!

Hi

I've just tried installing vmware, and something's gone wrong. When I try to
run it using /usr/bin/vmware, I get the following message:

vmware is installed, but it has not been (correctly) configured
for this system. To (re-)configure it, invoke the following command:
  /usr/bin/vmware-config.pl.

That's not a great problem - I can live without vmware for now. The problem
is that sudo doesn't work! If I type (in a console) "sudo gedit", the
password prompt never appears. The problem persists until I reboot the PC -
usually with the reset button, because the shutdown process stalls.

Can anyone give me some pointers on how to narrow down the issues?

Thanks

Olly
